"When I was small, my parents told me that the sounds in my ears at night were dinosaurs that we’re marching around my head.
I didn’t sleep for months,
But as I got older and learnt about heartbeats and pulses,
I felt a nostalgic pang for the days when the scariest things were dinosaurs on my pillow,
Rather than sexism and taxes.
When I was little I was also told by my tired parents that if I ate my carrots, I would see in the dark.
I ate every single carrot for months, lying awake at night willing myself to read the words on my poster across the room.
Now I’m older, and I’ve learnt the science behind my body and the facts about nutrition,
I am still no closer to knowing why I can’t sleep at night.
Only now, I have no dinosaurs or night-vision to get me through the darkness."
